AXIS Flight Simulation’s flight training outlook for 2025

Advancements in technology, training methodologies and market dynamics are all at the focus of our flight training outlook for 2025.

At AXIS Flight Simulation (AXIS), part of our role in shaping the future of flight training is to be on the front foot of new developments, technologies and the changing needs of trainees.

Here are our predictions for the next year:

The evolution of mixed reality

Mixed reality (MR) is changing the way we approach training and its potential in aviation continues to grow.

In October 2024, AXIS launched its Virtual Cockpit Procedure and Walkaround Trainer (VPT), which is powered by virtual reality (VR) technologies. It allows pilots to immerse themselves in realistic scenarios, improving skills and decision-making in a controlled environment. The MR and VR technology supports pilots in navigating tasks such as system familiarisation, ground operations, flight procedures and emergency scenarios.

The development of our VPT laid the foundation for an innovative framework and has given us the associated know how to integrate immersive technologies into more of our products. More to be announced on that soon!

As the technology matures, it is likely that we will see adoption across adjacent sectors, reinforcing VR and MR’s role as critical tools in the aviation ecosystem.

The role of AI in training

Artificial intelligence (AI) is prevalent across all industries, and aviation is no exception. AI-driven tools can analyse pilot performance data in real-time, offering personalised training recommendations and enhancing the overall learning experience.

Combining this with competency-based training (CBT) and evidence-based training (EBT) concepts, AI can offer great opportunities for individualised training. By focusing on specific competencies and leveraging data to identify areas for improvement, CBT and EBT contribute to producing better-prepared pilots, ultimately enhancing safety.

Preparing for eVTOL training needs

The rise of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft represents an exciting frontier for aviation. With companies partnering with training organisations to develop eVTOL pilot training programmes, the demand for specialised simulation tools is growing.

We recognise the opportunities that eVTOL offers, not only in urban air mobility but also in advancing pilot training methodologies. Although AXIS remains focused on business aviation, we are continually evaluating ways to adapt our technology for new segments, including the development of eVTOL simulators that meet the unique requirements of this rapidly evolving sector.

Addressing the pilot shortage

The aviation industry continues to grapple with a pilot shortage, something that has persisted post-pandemic. This shortage underscores the critical need for enhanced training infrastructure to bridge the gap between demand and supply.

This year, we will likely see an increased emphasis on addressing this challenge, with business aviation playing a pivotal role in driving training demand. According to Honeywell, the business aviation market is expected to grow in 2025 by approximately 12% in terms of aircraft sales, creating further pressure on training resources. At AXIS, we’re committed to supporting this growth through advanced simulation solutions that enable efficient and effective pilot training.

The next 12 months

At AXIS, our mission is to stay at the forefront of innovation in flight training while remaining attuned to the evolving needs of the aviation industry. Whether through advancements in MR, VR and AI technologies, adapting to the rise of eVTOL use, or addressing the pilot shortage, we are committed to delivering solutions that empower pilots and contribute to the industry’s growth.

As 2025 unfolds, we look forward to continuing our work with partners across the aviation sector to shape the future of flight training. Together, we can ensure that the next generation of pilots is equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing industry.
